Chapter 22

Gwen

Days turned into weeks, and with each passing session, the chemistry between Buck and me grows. But we don’t act on our feelings—at least, not yet.

During our sessions, Buck is always professional. His primary concern is always my well-being, ensuring that I am making progress. There are moments, of course, those fleeting glances and instances when our fingers brush against each other, sending familiar jolts of electricity between us. Yet, every time we teeter on the edge of crossing a boundary, he pulls back, trying to maintain a professional relationship.

Outside of our sessions, however, I find myself replaying our interactions. Late-night thoughts are consumed with what-ifs, and daydreams become filled with sexy scenarios where we definitely aren’t doctor and patient. What is wrong with me? He is my psychiatrist, and I am still married!

One afternoon, I walk through the gardens of the Rehab Center and sit on a park bench. I am lost in my thoughts when I hear a familiar voice.

“Is this seat taken?” Buck stands over me, in a casual shirt and jeans.

Surprised, I stutter, “No, not at all.”

He sits down next to me, a hint of hesitation in his eyes. “I hope I’m not intruding. I needed some fresh air.”

Out here, sitting together on this park bench, we don’t have to be doctor and patient. We’re just a man and a woman who like each other.

We chat about inconsequential things—the weather, the Rehab Center’s awful coffee, a book we have both read. The light conversation flows smoothly, and feels easy, and untethered from the weight of our roles as doctor and patient.

Buck speaks about his passion for psychiatry, his dreams, and even touched upon his past relationships. We both feel the freedom of being away from his office. I am feeling close to him. I am hoping he feels the same way.

Seeing hope on my face, Buck sighs, “Gwen, I value our sessions, and I respect the boundaries we’ve set. I don’t want it to compromise our work together.”

Feeling disappointed, I nod in agreement. “It’s complicated.”

As Buck stands up to leave, he says, “I’ll see you tomorrow, Gwen.”

As he walks away, I think perhaps in another time or place, things might have been different. But for now, we have an unspoken agreement: to enjoy the bond we share and to not cross the line of the patient and doctor relationship.
